Middle School Social Studies Fair

Welcome to the Middle School Social Studies Fair of 2020!

Our overarching theme this year was communities! Communities come in many sizes, and we all belong to multiple communities. For that reason, each grade used the skills they learned in their Social Studies and ELA classes to present their best academic work in line with our theme.

6th Grade

Project: Research Paper and Presentation

Social Studies Curriculum for the 6th grade includes the study of the ancient world. Students chose an ancient community to research. They learned how to use multiple sources, in print and on line. The students also wrote notes, outlined, and drafted a research report on their chosen community.

For the presentation component of our fair, students built a google slides show, and practiced an informative presentation teaching about their chosen community.

To determine the winner, we scored each student at each phase of the project: Research, Writing, and Presentation.

6th Grade Social Studies Fair

7th Grade

Project: Argumentative Paper and Debate

Social Studies Curriculum for the 7th grade includes the study of early American history. This was a time of changing attitudes and revolutionary thought. The 7th grade learned about the components of an argument, and rhetorical appeals used to persuade. Students were divided into debate teams, researched a topic, and wrote an argumentative paper.

For the presentation component of our fair, students teams debated each other in a formal, timed debate.

To determine the winner, we scored each student at each phase of the project: Research, Writing, and Presentation.

7th Grade Social Studies Fair

8th Grade

Project: Informative or Persuasive Speech

Social Studies Curriculum for the 8th grade includes the study of American History from the Civil War to the Present. As United States found its place in the world, many great leaders and thinkers provided the 8th graders with examples of great speeches. Students researched a topic meaningful to them, and wrote a wonderful speech.

For the presentation component of our fair, students built a google slides show, and performed their speech in front of the class.

To determine the winner, we scored each student at each phase of the project: Research, Writing, and Presentation.
